Lady Thera’s Workshop specializes in gowns that are inspired by artworks. This one was inspired by the famous portrait of Empress Theodora, but wandering through her shop is a wonderland of Van Gogh, Dali, Magritte, Monet, Klimt … even a few arty suits upstairs for the men.

I couldn’t help myself. I went back to the Conflagration to dance. Have you been there yet? The builders wanted you to imagine what it would look like if you could go inside your inventory and look around at the digital art inside. This place burns with blue and golden fire, with lines and binary codes, symbols and sculpture and music. Somewhere beneath I even found a little club.

Waiting for a wealthy date outside the Reaktor Club, I had an odd flashback.

When I was a teenager, my grandmother was worried about my social skills, so once in a while she would roll me into a sophisticated cocktail dress, and take me to a party with young military officers in dress uniform, or make me serve finger food and drinks at some political fundraiser full of tipsy older people. I always felt out of place and horribly overdressed.

I shook off the memory and tried to get back to feeling like an adult.

September is here and fall is so close I can hardly stand it. I am looking forward to soups and cooshy sweaters. The first pumpkin pie and hot chocolate.

I’m trying not to get ahead of myself. I’m going to slow down and enjoy the fall leaves, and the aromatic smells of the lavender and catmint and russian sage in my flower bed. I’m going to take my daughter on that hayride, to the pumpkin patch, and the petting zoo and fall pony rides. We are going to make sugar cookies and harvest fennel seeds and the last tomatoes.

People come and go as their priorities change, lovely and inspiring designers suddenly pack up shop and disappear, whole worlds vanish overnight and I wish I had visited them more often. Right now Ashoka Eales is having a closing sale for a few more days, and Phoenix Rising will vanish. I went poking through my inventory and stumbled over Kunstkammer, Armidi, Pacadi Jasha, … The Nameless Isle, Templum Obscurum, Cu Mara, Nagare Island, and on and on. But I am not exactly sad … People are going their own way, but I miss their art. Let me enjoy it while I can.

Well, in shoe heaven. After resisting for months, I finally gave in at Shoe Fair and bought these yummy shoes. I had to have them. They were the perfect soul mate for this jacket. I don’t care if you have seen this jacket on my blog before. It’s my favorite! I moaned a little when I tried on these heels, partly from pleasure, partly hoping it wouldn’t be too difficult to adjust the color of the sculpted toes to match my skin. But what was I worried about? Even with this gray tint, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I was called to Sick to recover ten stolen flash drives full of tech data for the S.I.C. Science Innovation Company. I equipped myself for a long night out prowling back alleys looking for them.

Yeah, a very long night.

They were so relieved to have their secrets back, they gave me a cycle prototype. Ditched the armor and went for a ride.

When I was a kid I used to walk down to the beach and hang out all day. I would get too hot on the sand, but I could float or snorkel for hours and never get hot. You would think I would have learned to use sunscreen, but I guess the teenage brain really does work differently. I went home regularly sporting horrible sunburns just like this one. Lobster Red.

I think just maybe the sunburn set should have come with a big bottle of aloe vera gel. I lived in that stuff in the summertime. Trust me, aloe is the best … and never put Noxzema on a bad burn. It feels good, but your skin will pay later.

I tried to be flattered that they were sending me to scout Location 459b but I’m not that good at lying to myself. The truth is that humans are prejudiced and machines are expendable. Expensive but expendable.

There is a certain amount of randomness in a portal window, and the first try landed me in some basement level or other.

Hard anticlimax. I spent the whole 21.3 minute window looking for a way out.

Not much use for the jet-equipped magnetic boots*. Or the microatomic power pack that looks like a skirt.

I brought a scouting drone and the headpiece has sonic analyzers and its own lighting. Yeah. At least the lights came in handy. My employer was pissed but it’s not like he could blame me. We’ll try again next year.

I considered photographing this outfit in brighter light but, honestly, more light did not make it easier to get a good image. This coat is just really, really, really Black. And surprisingly, I like it that way. The cuffs are turned up to show a gray lining, and the edges of the belts show a very subtle gray. And oh those feathers! I want to stroke the collar.

I have to say, the basic avatars have come a long way since I started in Second Life. Do you remember the female avatar with the purple shirt and jeans? Yeah, she is what you started with before today’s intro avatar. But I heard that today’s Library folder actually contains some nicer things, so I went poking around. The usual Noob avatar today wears a basic pink polka dot dress, but once you log into Second Life there are several other starter avatars and outfits. Most of the starter avatars are pretty basic, though interestingly they have added a non-human one from Grendel’s Children. But there are some outfits and accesssories in there that are more promising …

It’s still pretty nippy even if it’s supposed to be spring. Better wear a scarf and thick socks.

Always remember, no matter how hard the climb, it’s worth it if you get to the top. Great view! (I mean the sea, but yes my butt looks nice in these shorts too.)
