Guest Stylist Callie Oh makes beautiful music with her styling of this gorgeous outfit. I asked to send me notes for this blog post and this is what she wrote: “I am not a blogger nor a stylist, but I do love to wander the smaller shops looking for that something special I haven’t seen before and piecing together a look bit by bit. I found this dress at dp yum yum, added my Mandala pearls and Maitreya shoes and immediately felt like doing the Charleston all around the mall, well if it weren’t for lag I would have!”

Since her outfit made her feel the music – it seems so perfect that I decided to shoot the pictures at Cadenza.

Here you can see how beautifully coordinated the outfit style is – the socks a bold and stylish move.

The Maitreya shoes are so elegant and the details such ...

Louna Preis, proprietor of the Black Coffee Jazz Club and Louna's Roadside Beach Club rocks her own style – assembling clothes that could easily fit into an ordinary outfit into something quite extraordinary.
Picture perfect memories, scattered all around the floor.
Reaching for the phone cause, I can’t fight it any more.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.

It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone and I need you now.
I said I wouldn’t call but I lost all control and I need you now.
And I don’t know how I can do without, I just need you now.

Another shot of whiskey, can’t stop looking at the door.
Wishing you’d come sweeping in the way you did before.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.

For SL Fashionistas, this weekend presents the beginning of an embarrassment of riches coupled with the opportunity to do good while looking good. Yes, there are three, three highly anticipated events that opened this weekend and two of them are fundraisers. One is Designers United, the sporadic exhibition of design focused on a single theme, another is Hair Fair, raising funds for Wigs for Kids, and the other is Project Donate, an emergency fundraiser for UNICEF and their program of flood relief for Pakistan. To visually demonstrate that all this activity should be embraced as a good thing, I put together an outfit featuring items from all three events.

In fact, I decided to take the idea of mixing up the events so far that the top I am wearing is part Designers United and part Project Donate. The upper portion comes from La Gyo’s Antique ...

Phoenix rocks her look, casting a come-hither look over her shoulder.
All I ever wanted was our love to be true
More than just enough to get me by
I want a love to see me through
I don’t need another well-spent night,
Another clever sideways glance
I wanna look my baby in the eye
And know there’s nothing left to chance
Beautifully accessorized by her own jewelry, her shirt may say "Beautiful and Bored" but what her look really says is "don't waste my time"
Well if you’re tired of being lonely, beat up and confused
Darling, there’s only one thing you can do:
Come to me
Don’t be the one who’s waiting
Come to me
Babe, I got what you need
Won’t you come to me
There won’t be no hesitating, babe
I know what you mean to me

I don’t often do skin reviews because I am not one of those devil-in-the-details people who zoom in on the toes, the backs of the knees, the nipples and other parts hither and thither to inspect for flaws. I am guided more by the overall impression of the skin and how it makes me feel. The new Dafne skin from PXL Creations makes me feel great!

For the picky details, I go and read Gogo, Luna, Grazia and a few others to find out if there are flaws. Of course, with some skin designers, I just know they are flawless because the designers are so meticulous and painstaking. Hart Larsson of PXL Creations is that sort of designer. For example, reading on plurk, I saw that he reloaded 280 of his skin textures because he noticed that the texture compression varied in some viewers and make a ...

I got the blues from my baby left me
by the San Francisco Bay,
The ocean liner’s gone so far away.
Didn’t mean to treat him so bad,
He was the best guy I ever have had,
He said goodbye, I can take a cry,
I want to lay down and die.

I ain’t got a nickel
and I ain’t got a lousy dime.
He don’t come back,
think I’m going to lose my mind.
If he ever gets back to stay,
it’s going to be another brand new day,
Walking with my baby
down by the San Francisco Bay.

Sitting down looking from my back door,
Wondering which way to go,
The man I’m so crazy about,
He don’t love me no more.
Think I’ll catch me a freight train,
’cause I’m feeling blue,
And ride all the way to the end of the line,
thinking only of you.

It was a beautiful day – not hot, but with gentle warmth tempered by a soft breeze to freshen the senses. A perfect day for a ferry ride. Ferries are quite common in the Northwest and range from the small ones that carry a car or two and some passengers to huge ferries that carry hundreds of cars and buses and semis and the even more hundreds of people. Some ferries cater to tourist excursions but many more are part of people’s everyday commute.

The Ferry from AM Radio is relatively small in size – but it is beautifully made and evokes that sense of romance and adventure that ferries always make me think of.

My dress for The Ferry excursion is from UmeMode – a simple off the shoulder dress with a gathered waist in a blue and white stripe. The shoes are from Theosophy and are aptly in ...

I hadn’t been to UmeMode for quite awhile, but on a whim I popped over there on Friday and found some great new (to me) clothes including this lovely brown sundress.

It made me feel all pastoral, so I hopped over to Nordari for the photos.

Running around with the sheep, I wanted some nice flats and the lovely shoes Zaara made for Shoe Fair were just the ticket.

The Jumoke set from EarthStones has a great boho look that suits the dress as does the casual pony tail from fri.day.

I just have to show these off again. When Maitreya releases new products, a small number of group members are randomly selected and awarded fatpacks of the new release. With the popularity of Maitreya and its obviously large membership I never expected to win, but was surprised and squeefully pleased to discover that I did win fatpacks of the new Hana shoes released last week. And are they not lovely? Before I impress you with my skin matching skills, I should not that I just followed the instructions in the notecard that tells you exactly how to match your skin.

I am wearing a retro-inspired dress from AngelWing. I picked it up at the Clothing Fair, but did run over to the store to verify that it’s on sale in the store. I really love the floral print of the fabric and the lovely colors.

Rumor has it that Hair Fair is coming soon! It starts next weekend, to be specific. You should check out the Hair Fair blog for up to date information, including an explanation for their decision to set up as two sets of two sims instead of one set of four. As someone who has spent 20 minutes or more at a time bouncing off a sim border – that explanation makes sense to me. However, I think the best idea for this year is the creation of a Hair Fair Demo group you can join. Think of the possibilities. Not only can you try on the demos at your lag-free home at your leisure, but you could get together with friends and have a Demo Dance. Gidge & I threw a Hair Demo party once and it was hysterical.
Speaking of rumors, here’s a happy one and a true one. ...

London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls
London calling, now don’t look at us
All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain’t got no swing

The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear

I was feeling casual and after seeing that fabulous Whippet & Buck yoked t-shirt, I just had to try it out and mixing it with a different shirt just to see if it would work. Shorts from Miel were a perfect casual fit.

I was hanging out at Cadenza – an amazing water build with a small bandshell filled with flowers and a piano from which glowing musical staffs emanate.

The short western boots from G Field work beautifully. The soft pink with the flowers is delightful.

The hair style is from eha – a very casual – even messy look that suits the down-home casual outfit. The skin is from the upcoming Dafne skin release from PXL Creations.

It took me a couple days to pull this look together – and in the process I got to feeling very mournful for all the stores that have left Second Life® recently. Economic hard times find people cutting back and many of the stores in Second Life have had some rough months. It’s tough seeing favorite stores and creative designers leave.

It all began with the shoes. I picked these up at Shoe Fair though they have been available at Shiny Things since May. I loved the style and had a few things in my inventory that would work with them. However, the first three outfits I pulled together out of my inventory were from stores that had closed – Liberte, Vogart and Uncle Wiggley. How sad to see them gone. Not wanting this streak to continue, I decided to go shopping instead. Since I was looking for something floral ...

I ran into Squinternet Larnia, Designer/Owner of Donna Flora, at PXL Creations the other day. She was wearing an amazing dress with stunning embroidery. In fact, she was so beautifully styled I immediately asked her to be a guest stylist for our blog and she graciously agreed. In this shoot, she is wearing that dress she was wearing the other day and on second sight – it’s as beautiful as ever. The Lorelei dress is a lovely form-fitting dress with lovely puff sleeves accented with a lovely beaded fringe.

I asked her to come to Elonia for the shoot because I though the lovely blend of ice white and gold would make a beautiful setting. It looked even better than I thought it would. The surreal combination of an iced-over river and palms is stunning and the fantastic buildings gleam like jewels on the ground.

Pretty much everything Squinternet is ...

Two Roads Diverge at the entrance of the South Farthing park sim.
Two roads diverged in a primfilled wood
And sorry I could not travel both
Being on avatar, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
And waited for the rezzing of the undergrowth.
The Party Dress from Homespun is a summery delight with its soft yellow rose. Gos' Espadrilles now featured at the Shoe Fair are a fun accessory. I was able to accent the yellow espadrilles with blue piping and laces thanks to the ability to add color packs.
I should be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
But frankly, I could see no difference.

Jewelry from Violet Voltaire and hair from Exile complete the look.

No, the moon is not made out of green cheese, but if you go to Shadow Moon, the sky is. Well, green something anyway! I was wearing this audaciously fun outfit from The Black Canary and decided to check out Shadow Moon – the name of the place sounded so evocative of mystery and danger and illicit rendezvous in the darkness of the shadow of the moon.

Hah! Not so much. Still the bright whimsy of this cartoon goth world delighted my sense of humor. I could not resist.

As you can see, the Lament outfit from The Black Canary is perfect for a night in any goth world – be it in Toon Town or some more sinister realm. Memento Mori is a specific art piece – in any style or genre – that has the specific purpose of reminding us of our mortality. It says “Remember you must die.” The gown I am wearing is called Ange (Angel) and its rose color and loving detail is more a celebration of life, I thought it might be interesting to shoot it in the white on white Memento Mori – a complex and stunning cathedral build all in white that is alive with light shining through the countless windows.

As a reminder of mortality, a cathedral is an obvious choice. It is where the rites of life’s passage happen from christening to burial, the parentheses of life. It also evokes the immortal promise of the sacred for those who share that belief. Generally, the immensity of a cathedral reminds us of our own insignificance as well as our mortality. The ...

I wanted a special place to shoot it and what could be more special than the newly opened ChouChou? When I went to Grey Havens, I was reminded of the magnificent North Shore of Lake Superior – a favorite family vacation place. We always did at least one trip up the North Shore each year. Gitche Gumee was how Longfellow spelled Gichigami, the Ojibwe phrase for “Big Water.” Having spent time on a research ship counting June Bugs and small fry on Lake Superior, I can tell you it is definitely Big Water. I decided to go the Grey Havens to shoot the Isabella dress from ORTA because the fabric made me think of the North Shore’s Norway Pine & Blue Spruce and the granite shoreline.

Although it makes me think of Lake Superior, Grey Havens has sea lions and whales so that’s saltwater, not freshwater, alas! By the way, is it TMI to share that Mom had the Song of Hiawatha memorized and always recited big chunks ...

The Niven Collection by Scarlett Niven is primarily an exploration of the vast possibilities of black and white. Yes, there are a few items in the store with color, but by and large, the entire collection is a symphony in black and white. This dress I am wearing is called BodyCon and I am not positive what Con stands for but Body Conscious would be a good option. The always fashion forward styles of N-Core make a perfect alliance with Niven Collection clothing.

The BabyDoll Dress (Vintage) from House of Fox is a playful, fun summer dress.
I first saw this gorgeous BabyDoll Vintage dress on the feed. I jotted down the name of the store (House of Fox) and when I next logged in I hopped on over there to get the dress. I am a sucker for vintage floral prints and the print is not only lovely, but I love the way the shape of the skirt and the beautifully made belt. I easily found the store in search and also fell in love with a few other things like the dress you saw yesterday. Well, until Midnight anyway! Last night I had my 3rd Rez Day Party and we danced for hours and despite Gidge’s best efforts I did not wake up with a dozen strap-ons – though we did have a bumper car attraction for the party last night. The next step in the (r)evolution of hair design is making a hair base worn on the tattoo layer – enabling it to be worn with any skin. To demonstrate exactly how versatile this method is, I though that I would go gray – really gray – so that you can see the strongest possible example of how it works with this collection from MiaMai by Monica Outlander.

Actually, the other day I was reading a “A Beautiful Blue Death” by Charles Finch and the love interest of hero-detective Charles Lenox was described as wearing a gray walking dress with a coral sash. Now, her dress was in the style of 1865, but the description did make me pause and decide to put together a gray and coral outfit. When I decided to go gray for the hair base pictures, it seemed the perfect ...

Hair in Second Life has come a long way since Washu first developed prim hair. This evolution has gone from prim hair to flexis, sculpts and combinations thereof. Over a year ago, we first started seeing hair bases with attachments, usually a bun, ponytail and perhaps an updo in blonde and black, but still limited in variety and color. With the 2.0 tattoo layer we saw a new innovation, the hair base on the tattoo layer with attachments best illustrated by Monica Outlander’s creations for MiaMai which I will highlight tomorrow. Today, I will stay with the skin plus hair base innovation and its tremendous expansion with the release of Baiastice’s new Pulchra skin by Sissy Pessoa. The new Picnic Dress from Haven Designs is a fun and cheery summer sundress that had me heading out for the outdoors. I love the field of daisies that begins lightly on the bodice and gets more intense as it goes down the skirt. The dress comes in seven summer colors with an additional blue limited edition for the Stumblebum Brigade.

I headed out to Third World to check out another corner for this shoot. Seriously, this sim is full of what you could call little set pieces or tableau that are perfect for photos while all working together cohesively.

The sundress demands summery accessories and what could be better than the espadrilles and floppy hat from Gos. They coordinate with each other and as you add color packs to the shoes, you get additional flexibility. For example, these are the yellow espadrilles but the lace and the seam are ...

When I saw the delicate tones of the new Baiastice skins in the Porcelain tone coupled with the delicacy of the lace jacket for this DCNY outfit, I knew exactly where I wanted to shoot – in China. Not the China of hustle, bustle and the Great Wall, but the watercolor China that you can find in the magnificent China sim.

This shot gives you just a small idea of the wonderful photographic opportunities you can find in China. I also played a little bit with perspective, using the CTL-8 lens change to the max to give it a shift in perspective.

Sometimes when you see a design you can trace its roots and inspirations in the choices of fabric, color or textures or in the shape and forms it assumes. In this dress from G Sloane Couture, you can see two inspirations at work. The print in the fabric draws pays homage to the fabulous art of Gustav Klimpt. In particular, it reminds me of the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer though it is clearly not a copy of that dress or his work, but something inspired and re-imagined from memories and admiration for Klimpt’s work. The form of the dress is very original, with its squared lines and offset angles – and in it I can see the architectural work and Art Deco influence of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The influence of Wright is less obvious, though I see it in the square fasteners and cutouts and in the off-centered squares in ...

It’s pretty clear that with the many Sn@tch separates we can put together all sorts of looks, but let’s not forget that we can also take pieces of outfits and mix with separates for an entire new look as well. For example, the cocktail dance dress that Gidge blogged the other day is a perfect resource for mining for ingredients in a new look. Here, I take the bodice and sleeves and mix with a sash from Personal and a skirt from Sn@tch for a new look.

The fabulous skirt is made with three sculpts so that it moves with, not against, your own movements. Full-length sculptie skirts are tricky – breaking them at the knees and using separate prims really addresses that challenge. The handkerchief hem gives the dress visual interest while enabling the break in the sculpts to be completely hidden. The sash from Persona brings the skirt and ...

Congratulations on being awarded a Fabbie from It's Only Fashion.
What with one thing and another, Gidge and I have decided to enter the fraught fray of awards and accolades with our own entry – the Fabbies. The Fabbies will recognize excellence in blogging wherever we see it and recipients are encouraged to post the award banner on their winning post. There are some rules and criteria that we should go over now.
- When dicussing the Fabbies, anyone who says the entire name of the award, “It’s Only Fabulous” must say fabulous! with a joyous trill.
- The most important criterion for judging is that are no criteria. Posts may be selected for humor, topicality, fabulous photography or any other reason that flutters our wings.
- Actually, there are some criteria that limit the pool under consideration, but not the reasons for winning.
These are some of my favorite pieces from Digit Darkes and as her most unashamed fan girl, i will miss her intensely. We have featured her 166 times on our blog and it seems like it should have been more. Gidge!

Marie Antoinette was a fashionista. She’s not the original fashionista because there’s Du Barry and Pompadour. I am sure if we could only find the style section of The Imperial Times of Rome, we could discover Calpurnia’s favorite stola maker. Fashion is probably as old as human existence since we just know that some cave women draped their skins better than others. Still, Marie Antoinette does have the singular distinction of being someone whose love of fashion not only contributed to her death, but to a revolution. I guess it is possible to take love of fashion too far. Sshhh! Don’t tell Gidge!

Anyway, if Marie were alive today, she would shop at Sn@tch, and she would buy this dress. Good grief, it’s named after her. I shot it at Utopia 04-Markus Inkpen. When I choose a place to shoot an outfit, I generally choose one of two approaches. Either ...

In addition to getting a concentrated does of high fashion and raising funds for charity, events like International Fashion Week also introduce us to new creators – perhaps not new to the grid, but new to us. This IFW10 I discovered more than one new-to-me designer, but only one was also a new-to-me word – Convoitise. So I had to look it up and while it can mean covet or desire, I had to go with the last one for the blog title in light of the micro-mini but macro-sexy dress from Convoitise.
